Riverside Church is a thriving, growing church located in the heart of the City of Exeter, Devon. It is a spiritual home to approximately 400 regular attendees and provides a strong community of faith for many people.
Riverside Church is more than just a building, it’s a home. Riverside Christian Centre is the house; it is located centrally within the city, boasts many rooms and facilities, and is used by thousands of people every year. However, it is Riverside Church that is our spiritual home.
We often refer to the structure we build as the house. It only becomes a home when people start to live in it as a family. Here, we build our life-long relationships and great memories. This includes emotional attachments, the feeling of ownership and the shelter the home provides to its members. A home is a place that provides love, peace, comfort, happiness, security and confidence, qualities that you don’t expect in a house, which is just made of bricks and mortar.
Simply put, Riverside Church is where we feel at home, it is a place where we develop a thriving, vibrant growing community of the Christian faith.
Our mission statement simply states ‘Love God, Love People’. This reflects the words of Jesus:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: Love your neighbour as you love yourself. All the law and the writings of the prophets depend on these two commands.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
Our logo displays these values – the heart-beat representing our love for God, the river our love for the city and the Union Flag our love for this nation. The love of Jesus Christ is the foundation of Riverside Church and makes the difference between us being just a house with nice facilities, and a spiritual home of Christ-followers living together in community. The presence of Jesus revealed through the Holy Spirit makes the difference in our facilities, activities and relationships.
It is our desire that Riverside Church and Riverside Christian Centre express these words of Jesus:
“I have come that you may have life and live life to the full!” (John 10:10)
“Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptise them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
In doing this we aim to create a group of people who are intentionally committed to building life-long relationships and fantastic memories, and to sharing the great news of Jesus Christ with our friends, family, colleagues and local communities.
